During the third edition of what had become the biennial video-game art exhibit, we wanted to experiment a little with genres. Music—techno, particularly—was such a big part of our first openings and a constant part of our video-game art shows. We decided to commemorate that with a CD compiling music from some favorite video-game-inspired musicians. Curatorial interns Kova Walker-Lecic and Liz Parent, our board member Toneski, and I worked together to create a CD with (of course) thirteen tracks of video-game-inspired music.
The musicians included Fuckstorm (who had deejayed at the first Level_13 opening), Caly McMorrow, the Super 8-Bit Brothers, and more. Artist David Walker-Lecic designed and then letter-pressed beautiful covers for the compilation, and Toneski mastered the tracks to get them ready to press. It was a fun project, a great addition to the show, and a reminder that music has long been just as much a part of the Northeast Minneapolis arts scene as the visual.
